1. Is my child suitable for Funday International School's curriculum?
We welcome all students aged 10-16 to join. Our courses are synchronized with subjects studied in grades 7-9 in the United States. If a child is enrolled in the Bilingual Department of a Junior High School, they will be better suited for the full English curriculum of our school. If a child is studying at a regular middle school, they can absorb their Taiwanese courses during the day, then in the evening, they can lay both a language and academic foundation for studying abroad at Funday.
2. My child wants to register for a course, what level of English proficiency is required?
Before the formal registration for the course, we will evaluate the child according to the Common European Framework (CEFR). Children with a level of B1, which is equivalent to the intermediate level of the National English Test, are best suited for this school. If children need to supplement their English skills, they can also use the language training courses provided on the Funday online platform in order to accelerate their English development.
3. When is the most appropriate time to send a child abroad? What preparations should be made?
The most suitable age for sending children abroad is 15-18 years old. Children at this stage have reached maturity and already have basic self-care and social skills. The only skills that need intensive strengthening are language communication and subject knowledge. Children who are accustomed to an all-English learning environment before going abroad can fully concentrate on developing their academic and social connections as they study abroad in high school. They do not need to spend another one to two years in and out of language schools. Whether the goal is to become an exchange student or to attend a foreign secondary school as a regular student, this is the most efficient route to higher education overseas.
4. Why is it better to go to a language school in Taiwan?
The cost of studying at a language school in Taiwan is relatively low. Outside of study time, parents can still accompany and care for their children. With the aid of a native English language environment, children do not need to face the pressure of both a new life and schoolwork at the same time. They can gradually get used to an immersive English learning environment while maintaining stability, both physically and mentally. Funday International English School attaches great importance to the communication between parents and children. We regularly hold parent meetings, so that we can be truly involved in a child's growth and so that everyone involved can understand a child's educational development.
Will Funday International English School assist my child with school work during the day?
Our curriculum planning and schedule is completely based on the Common Core State Standards Initiative (Common Core State Standards Initiative), which is separate from the general middle school curriculum in Taiwan. Part of the curriculum planning references Taiwan's bilingual middle school curriculum, but the schedules are not completely synchronized. The teaching method used will be based on multiple guided interactions, rather than onesided lectures from the teacher. After all, if studying abroad is in the child's future, he or she must their own motivation to learn and the ability to work independently already instilled. They shouldn't be limited by domestic academic performance standards. However, our teachers will provide guidance and homework for our school's courses during the child's free periods. We will also arrange lively activities and tests on a regular basis to help both the school and parents understand the children's progress.
6. How is the teaching method of Funday International School different from that of Taiwanese middle schools?
In terms of sheer numbers, the average private middle school has 50 students per class. Teachers at these schools don’t have the time it takes to take care of every single one of their students individually. Their teaching is based mainly on textbooks and therefore only focuses on training the children's listening and reading abilities. Our classes are small and ideal for language learning, with only 6~10 students. Our teachers have enough time to focus on each student’s individual progress. Through the interactive approach, students who are unable to speak at their regular school (during the day) get plenty of speaking practice at Funday International. On top of in-class interaction, students’ opportunities to express themselves go beyond the classroom at Funday. Individual and group reports will be assigned at appropriate times to help students to train not just their speaking ability but their writing skills as well. We believe that the four main categories of language ability (listening, speaking, reading and writing) need to be developed in a balanced manner, before any of them can be used as indicators of true language progress.
